Convo Africa Partners with Local Leaders to Address Mental Health

-

Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County – March 12, 2025

On Wednesday, March 12, 2025, Convo Africa, through its Healing is Possible initiative, joined a community meeting in Ngadu Location, organized by Chief Bethroser Gaconde, her assistant chiefs, and community elders. The meeting brought together a diverse group, including the business community, youth leaders, peace committee members, and local residents, with the presence of Assistant County Commissioner Danson Mwangangi (Kirinyaga Central).

The focus of this engagement was clear: demystifying mental health, breaking the stigma around substance use disorders (SUDs), and finding practical community-led solutions for those struggling with addiction.

Mental Health Awareness: A Community Responsibility

Speaking at the Baraza, James Wetu, CEO of Convo Africa, introduced the mission of Healing is Possible, highlighting the urgent need to change perceptions of addiction and mental health within the community. He reaffirmed Convo Africa’s commitment to working alongside local leaders and organizations to provide education, screening, rehabilitation, and reintegration support for individuals affected by SUDs.

The engagement also featured Mwea Serenity Treatment and Counselling Center, a rehabilitation institution that has been a focal partner of Convo Africa in providing treatment and recovery services for those battling addiction. Representatives from the center explained that addiction is a brain disease, not a moral failure, and requires medical and psychological intervention rather than stigma and exclusion.

The team elaborated on the science behind SUDs, the impact of addiction on individuals and families, and the available professional interventions to support recovery. Their presence underscored the importance of holistic rehabilitation services that help individuals regain control of their lives.

Chacha’s Story: Proof That Healing is Possible

A key moment of the meeting was the heartfelt testimony of Chacha, a community member who has walked the path of recovery. With honesty and courage, he shared his journey from substance use to healing and reintegration, highlighting the challenges he faced and the power of support in rebuilding his life. His story was a testament to the fact that recovery is possible with the right care, encouragement, and community acceptance.

Chacha’s experience reminded everyone that those navigating substance use challenges are not lost causes but individuals in need of compassion, understanding, and a second chance. His words encouraged the community to see people on the path to recovery not by their struggles, but by their strength, resilience, and potential.

Next Steps: Sustaining Engagement and Support

This meeting marked the beginning of an ongoing collaboration to support Chief Bethroser Gaconde in her mission to demystify mental health challenges in Ngadu Location. At Convo Africa, we believe that open conversations, community engagement, and access to professional care can transform lives. Healing is possible, and together, we can ensure that mental health challenges are addressed with knowledge, compassion, and practical solutions.
