How Social Media is Eroding the True Essence of Marriage

-

If you grew up in an African home with a complete family stem, you probably understand how valuable family is, if not, you still might have a clue. For any family to exist a man and a woman must unite, probably go on a couple of dates, become acquainted to each other, if it goes well they then decide on the next crucial step which is marriage. Taking off this road is a lifelong decision that requires time. Eventually, the plan for most singles is finding the right fit before this happens.

How Marriage is Perceived

Doesn’t it seem realistically beautiful to have a home? , a supportive partner who always has your back while on the other end your kids are up and down calling you mummy or daddy? Indeed, it is. However, many shun from this reality since with marriage comes responsibility, which according to many replaces the luxury of enjoying life.

Lots of young adults feel the weight of lifelong partnership, and probably seeing the responsibilities their parents undertook while raising them is more than enough to hold them back from taking certain steps. The fear of commitment and accountability also reigns in the hearts of these youngins with social media fuelling even more apprehension.

How social media has disrupted the true meaning of marriage

The ideal question is, what does social media have to with marriage and does it play a role ? Social media has eroded the institution of marriage that once stood out, portraying a false image of how marriage should look like. For instance, the notable influencers and media personnel we follow on social media.

Most of these influencers are used to displaying their life in public, their personal life included, and it’s not surprising to hear stories of separations and divorces as by now it has become a normalized issue. Moreover, even with the many scandals and publicity they display, it’s no surprise one will follow them to the brim and still view them as role models, ironical right?

The Choice of Belief

Our beliefs influence the kind of choices we make, and the kind of choices we make influences the results of our lives ahead. In this context those who believe less in the institution of marriage are most likely to hold on to short term affairs such as hookups, flings or even friends with benefits. By them embracing this counterfeit belief it leads them to the pit of ‘I will marry when I want’ sooner than later age catches up with them; leading them to hurriedly marry in their forties, what’s more unfortunate is them ending up with the wrong person out of the haste.

My opinion is marriages work, I choose to believe the so-called image social media has portrayed about marriage is utterly false. But even so, people divorce and separate, but it doesn’t mean the same will happen to you, as I usually say don’t let any narration hold a pen to your story.

Even though marriage is beautiful, it’s not always a bed of roses.

Even though marriage is beautiful, it’s not always a bed of roses. Marriages require patience, trust and sometimes forgiveness for it to survive, in simple terms no relationship is ever flawless. Growing up we would pick fights with our siblings, get into heated arguments with our parents, but even with that we still got back on track by laying our differences aside. Relationships at times collapse, but the best thing is, it eventually bounces back if both parties invest their energy in making it work.

Conclusion

In conclusion, allowing social media to define our understanding of marriage can overshadow our approach towards the matter. But even with its complexities, marriage is beautiful and to truly understand marriage, we must look beyond the superficial representation social media provides.
