Brian Opidi: Inspiring Journey of Resilience and Success in Football

-

Introduction to Brian Opidi

I am a 19-year-old footballer currently playing for FC Creative Hands. I am originally from Mukuru kwa Njenga in Nairobi and attended Kisumu Boys. Furthermore, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at Zetech University.

What inspired you to start playing football?

Football became part of my life in 2012 when I was in class 2. Influenced by friends passionate about the sport, I joined them despite initially oversized boots, which I was gifted upon arrival but removed and played barefoot. Encouraged by a warm reception and the joy of playing, I returned for training the next day, marking the beginning of my journey.

In high school, after proving my capability, I rose to captain the senior team.

Describe your journey so far?

My football journey began at Cypruss Football Academy, initially in Kware and now at Embakasi Girls. Despite challenges such as distractions in the form of girls and my friends slowly losing interest in the beautiful game, I persevered. In high school, after proving my capability, I rose to captain the senior team. Post-school, joining FC Creative Hands was daunting due to my stature, yet scoring a hat trick on my debut bolstered my confidence. Subsequently, I played 23 games, scored 9 goals, and contributed 7 assists in a competitive league, earning my first league medal. Despite facing tougher competition and currently standing 5th with 2 games remaining, I acknowledge criticism of my performance this season compared to last. Nonetheless, I draw strength from these challenges and aim to finish strong.

Could you share a memorable moment that made you take football seriously?

A pivotal moment that solidified my commitment to football occurred in 2013, when, despite being sidelined and under-equipped during a crucial match, I scored a decisive goal that propelled my team to the semi-finals. Recognized as the most promising player, I was the only one to receive this medal amongst my teammates. This experience significantly boosted my confidence.

How do you prepare yourself mentally and physically before big matches and training?

Ahead of training sessions, I prepare meticulously, ensuring I have essentials like water-packed well in advance. Arriving early helps me focus mentally. For significant matches, adequate rest is crucial. Lastly, study the gameplay of skilled players, like Bernardo Silva’s ability to retain the ball, for insights.

Who has been the biggest influence on your football career so far, how have they shaped your development as a player?

In terms of influences on my career, my friends and coach have played pivotal roles. Through constructive criticism and unwavering support, they’ve bolstered my reputation within our community. Notably, friends such as Awilo, Lameck “Lammy,” Voke, Ngwenyi, Mape, and Molly, alongside Coach Dick, have been instrumental in shaping my footballing journey.

My pursuit of football has demanded considerable sacrifices. Enduring long walks to matches due to lack of transportation, financial constraints on equipment, and prioritizing matches over academic obligations are amongst the challenges I’ve faced.

What sacrifices have you made to pursue football, and do you feel they are worth it?

My pursuit of football has demanded considerable sacrifices. Enduring long walks to matches due to lack of transportation, financial constraints on equipment, and prioritizing matches over academic obligations are amongst the challenges I’ve faced. I skipped school for an Under 13 FKF match and became the top scorer in Nairobi County, earning a certificate upon entering high school, which was very late, but I have it to this day. Despite these hardships, I cherish the memories and believe every sacrifice has been worthwhile.

Can you describe the moment of adversity and how you overcame it?

Recently, being benched despite my capabilities has been a challenge, particularly in tournaments like the Sakaja Cup. However, I maintain a resilient mentality, viewing football as a test of mental strength. As I often say, “#mentallstabilitymatters.” You may be criticised, but you should try 100 times instead of quitting after 99 times.

What aspects of your game do you constantly work on improving and their importance?

As a forward, mastering timing and skills like the ‘stepover’ and ‘elastico’ are ongoing priorities. Simplifying my playing style while refining these techniques remains crucial for enhancing performance.

How do you stay motivated when facing setbacks?

I find inspiration in the stories of my friends Lammy and Molly. Lammy had a promising opportunity to fly to Spain for football activities, but it fell through due to COVID-19. This setback initially affected his morale, but he persevered and has since made a strong comeback. He is now back to playing and training consistently, demonstrating his enduring talent. Lammy’s resilience serves as a constant motivation for me.

Similarly, Molly’s dedication in a male-dominated sport is truly inspiring. Despite the challenges she faces, she excels and is regularly selected for prestigious events like Harambees. Her success and determination encourage me to push forward in my own football journey.

As I often say, “#mentallstabilitymatters.” You may be criticised, but you should try 100 times instead of quitting after 99 times.

What are your short and long-term goals and aspirations in football?

My immediate goal is to secure a spot in Division 1 as the current season concludes. Looking ahead, I aspire to not only excel as a player but also contribute positively to the football community, potentially as a coach or mentor. Amsha, an organization my friends are part of, aims to empower children through football. One of them will rise above, breaking the cycle of negative influence. We aspire to put our slum on the football map.
