Swipe Right for Love? The Psychology of Online Dating (Beyond the Hype)

-

Being a testament to online dating and being exposed to it early enough has both had it’s pro’s and con’s. To those oblivious of how dating apps do operate, matching is the intended purpose where the subject involved has to pick the best out of the profiles displayed by either swiping right or left. The mechanism is if the user swipes right they are interested but if they swipe left unfortunately it’s a miss which in simple terms translates to  “not interested”. Luck knocks on this end when the subject in the profile swipes right, there, and then it’s considered a match.

Similar to social media, dating apps also involve the use of a logarithm as this intends to bring the user closer to profiles that share similar interests, hobbies, or traits. Some may think that using the best pictures or using filters will give them a free ticket to obtaining matches, however that is partly the case. The goal on tinder is grabbing attention, and without authenticity you’re more likely to repel than attract.

The Experience

I was quite a shy individual and even with my good looks that alone could not earn me bonga points in the real life social dating pool. With how popularized tinder had become at the time, all I had to do was do some clicks and boom! The app was on my phone. Tinder made everything easy, I was enthralled more on how affordable it was at the moment with a very limited subscription fee. I would be lying if I said I didn’t find matches, my notification used to vibrate constantly out of the many matches I got. Shockingly, never did I meet a single soul, maybe one or two who we barely even connected after the first date.

However, there are both sides to every coin, do not let my narration hold a pen to your story. If you’re open to exploring, by all means do so, possibly you might be one of the few who finds love through online dating. However, if you still have your fears, listen to your intuitions, online dating has more cons than you could think of.

What Purpose does Online Dating Serve

I do not intend to be a harbinger for bad news, however if the goal to match is to get married think through. According to cloudwards.net, it significantly shows that 42% of the users use the app purely for the intentions of marriage and only 13% get engaged or married and to make it worse, most of these relationships barely last a year.

In the olden age for one to rightfully get a soulmate, certain procedures had to be met even in stages of courtship. What intrigues me the most is the means of communication which sometimes could be through the use of mails, often than not it could take days or even weeks before landing on the hands of the intended recipient. Even through the hardship, most of these unions passed the test of time, and this happens to be the narration of our mothers and fathers. Gradually online dating came and lifted off the burden of doing the chasing, instead relationships are created instantaneously in a matter of split seconds.

Online dating: a land of endless possibilities or a breeding ground for disappointment? This article explores the psychology behind online dating apps, delving into the allure of swiping right and the algorithms that match you with potential partners. We uncover the surprising truth: while some find love, many fall victim to the “hookup culture” or even online scams.

What are the Con’s

In the emphasis of trying to find quick matches and casual meet ups, the hookup culture has gradually arisen amongst the youths. The eagerness to find love and foster meaningful connections has now been eroded with lust and in order to tap to more consumers, dating apps have added new preferences such as ‘short term’ to befit the user’s taste.

Reportedly cases of extortion, blackmail and scamming is a wide topic that most are not ready to tackle. Unfortunately, some users hide behind profiles to prey on innocent victims who are extremely new and naive. In such cases emotional manipulation is commonly used to push the victims to send money whereafter they become blocked.

While most dating apps may convince its consumers that privacy is key, users are brainwashed to fill in sensitive data details that may later on have a long term imprint in terms of online safety. Let no one tell you that online dating is like walking on glass, it’s not.

How does the Online Dating Pool Benefit

Dating apps like tinder, bumble or any other platform survives through certain features like premium features and subscription models. Likewise, if you spot a click that directs you to boost your profile for more views or matches, then that’s how you know money is being made by these companies. With credible statistics being laid down, tinder happens to be making a revenue of 808 million us dollars. The paradox of it is that even after spending your lifetime fortune in these features you’re likely to go home empty-handed, no match no money, but again the company becomes richer.
