Beyond the Degree: Strategies for Landing a Job After Graduation

-

Facing the Job Market Struggle

Many graduates face a harsh reality: unemployment despite their acquired knowledge. This situation can lead graduates to question the value of education, wondering, “Is there another strategy out there?”

The daily routine becomes a cycle of waking up, checking social media, and returning to sleep. The lack of a job creates frustration and mental discomfort. Every graduate dreams of landing a job after graduation, but for many, this dream remains unfulfilled. As months turn into a year, the initial hope and energy can crumble, leaving a feeling of emptiness and detachment.

The constant rejection from HR departments can make graduates feel like less of a person. Recurring job applications can be disheartening, especially with the fear of losing valuable skills learned in school. This fear can be overwhelming and detrimental.

Coping Mechanisms and a Shift in Perspective

Faith can play a significant role in overcoming the emotional challenges of unemployment.  Learning to tailor one’s CV to specific job descriptions is another crucial step. Additionally, taking short online courses or developing new skills can be a productive way to utilize this time.

Shifting focus from the “dream job” to more practical options can be beneficial. Applying for jobs outside one’s exact field can offer an opportunity to gain experience and build a network. Connecting with employed friends for potential leads can also be helpful.

Taking a job that doesn’t align with one’s career goals, such as a physically demanding “kibarua” (manual labour), can be a harsh reality. While this experience might not be ideal, it can be a valuable learning opportunity. Sometimes, these challenges force us to re-evaluate our approach and seek better options.

The Road to Recovery: Building Resilience

Realizing that one’s success depends on self-reliance can be a powerful turning point. This self-awareness fosters resilience and motivates individuals to take control of their future.

Learning new skills through short courses, writing, or other creative outlets can be a rewarding way to invest in yourself. Focusing on personal growth and development expands your potential and opens doors to new opportunities.

The journey through unemployment can be challenging. However, with determination, self-improvement, and a shift in perspective, you can navigate these obstacles. Embrace the learning experiences, develop your skills, and never lose hope. You will eventually find a path that leads to fulfilment and success.
