Man Up? No Way! Why Bottling Up Emotions is Killing Men.

-

“A man should not cry.” This common societal slogan limits many men from expressing their deep emotions when endangered, angered, beaten, sad, or feeling down. The notion that men should not cry stems from a lack of awareness about their mental health.

Men’s mental health is a topic that is not given the attention it deserves. Statistics show that 75% of men’s deaths by suicide are higher than that of women. Many of these men might have needed someone to ask if they were okay, but no one cared to ask—after all, they are men. Most have undergone traumatizing events that tamper with their state of mind. They fear what society will think of them, and no man likes to be labelled as a weakling. Many find solace in substance abuse to escape reality temporarily.

Triggers of Men’s Mental Health Problems

As we observe Men’s Health Awareness Month, we must analyse men’s mental states and support those in need. Mental health problems can arise from various causes, including financial instability, marital conflicts, harsh work conditions (e.g., military combat), chronic illness, societal stigma, and personal losses.

These factors can lead to various mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. Men often struggle to talk about their feelings due to societal stigmatization, high expectations, lack of mental health education, or financial constraints preventing access to mental health services.

Mental health issues can shut down individuals, leading to suicidal thoughts. We must support men, enlighten them about mental health, tackle every aspect, and listen to them because it might just save a life.

Untreated mental health issues can impair social functioning, lead to substance abuse and accidents, cause anger issues affecting work relationships, or even result in suicide.

Untreated mental health issues can impair social functioning, lead to substance abuse and accidents, cause anger issues affecting work relationships, or even result in suicide. Regular sessions where men can open up and relieve their burdens are crucial. Creating awareness and offering free and accessible services are also vital.

Addressing men’s mental health requires understanding the causes of their distress. Men play essential roles in society, typically as breadwinners, and deserve proper care. Be your brother’s keeper—support and create awareness to save a life.
