Anxiety is a complex mental health disorder that affects millions of people worldwide and goes beyond simply being a feeling of worry or uneasiness. I have a special viewpoint on this sometimes overlooked facet of mental health because I deal with anxiety myself. By sharing my experiences, I hope to dispel misconceptions regarding anxiety and increase public understanding of how it influences day-to-day living.
Anxiety Disorder
There are several types of anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and particular phobias. Each person may experience these problems differently, resulting in a variety of symptoms such increased worry, dread, restlessness, and trouble concentrating.
Being anxious means surviving a never-ending emotional rollercoaster. Even seemingly insignificant activities like answering the phone or going to a social event can cause intense emotions of anxiety and fear. It might be difficult to fully participate in daily activities when one is overcome by paralyzing fear of the unknown and the expectation of possible threats.
It doesn’t mean all anxious people go through this all the time, there are varying degrees. I can say that I can go through dread when making an impromptu phone call, and I will be very anxious in a large crowd. However, there are anxiety inducing situations that don’t stress me as much.
Coping Strategies
Over the years, I’ve discovered various coping strategies that have helped me manage my anxiety. These include mindfulness and meditation practices, regular exercise, journaling, and seeking professional support through therapy or counselling. Finding what works best for you is essential, as everyone’s journey with anxiety is unique.

One of the biggest challenges of living with anxiety is the stigma attached to mental health issues. There’s often a misconception that anxiety is just a temporary feeling that will pass with time. There is also the belief that because I have anxiety, I am unable to handle situations and as such I’m unsuitable. I hate this, because despite living with anxiety, I love challenges and new experiences. When new experiences come up, I have learned to push through the anxiety and not let it hinder me from living my life as fully as I want to.
People with anxiety require love and care from their loved ones, to help them navigate stressful situations.
It’s important to be kind and supportive to individuals who have loved ones who are experiencing anxiety. Effective anxiety management can be greatly impacted by listening without passing judgment, understanding about anxiety disorders, and exercising patience in trying times.
Increasing knowledge of anxiety is crucial to fostering a more accepting and encouraging atmosphere for those who experience it. Through the exchange of personal narratives and perspectives, we may dismantle obstacles, confront preconceptions, and encourage candid discussions about mental health.
Anxiety is hard, but it is not the end of life. With great coping techniques and the support of my loved ones I am overcoming it daily and so can you.
